Hello Ingrid,
The silent time even if everyone is uncomfortable is an important time.
Hard on the facilitator. And sometimes those times feel like hours and not
minutes. It is not about shyness and whatever you do, don't do an
icebreaker. It is important to work with the chaos/order.

Hello Ingrid and Birgitt
I really felt very comfortable at the beginning of an open
space here in Berlin with 260 people. Even if it takes a little time just
look around and get into non-verbal contact with people. It will help
you to calm down.

Hello,
I agree with the responses to Ingrid's question that advise no
icebreakers. Participants are not the only ones who have to do a
little-"fright-biting." Facilitators have to do it from time to time as

Ingrid, while I have had to wait a few times, but was always glad I
did. I agree with Birgitt..no ice breakers. Here is a question based on

Hi. I have been lurking on the list for a few months and have enjoyed
the discussions immensely and have learned a lot about Open Space and
the people who are drawn to it.
I am new to Open Space and have a potential client who needs to
implement a very critical technical project. All of their co
I agree with Birgitt Ingrid. Let the silence go as long as necessary. It
does say a great deal about the sponsors and the extent to which they are
trusted. That pre-conference work is critical to help them decided to open
the space and be clear as to how open it is, and to identify theme. It may
