I removed osmand+ and downloaded osmand 2.4.7; I'll use it without any
plug-ins until I regain confidence in the app. Maybe it was the + version
with the paid subscription that was causing the problems. I liked the idea
of frequently updated data and being able to add data to OSM. Guess
I have file an issue on the OsmAnd bug tracker in order to reach the
developers:

Are you by chance trying to use a GPS track file to help calculate your
route?
The normal way to "clear" an on-screen Osmand-generated route is to press
the blue navigation icon in the lower left (which is not present in your
screenshot), then press the "X" to stop navigation.
