Your suggestion sounds likely but when I go to Settings-Navigation-Car I
don't see any parameter that is equivalent to Configure Map-Map Mode.
Anywhere else I should be looking?

Hi! Also you can open OsmAnd - Menu - My Places - My tracks - Import, and
open previously saved to device GPX track.
If you don't see My Tracks tab, open Menu - Pugins - Turn On Trip Recoding
Plugin.
