I recently switched to Locus Map and their recording track feature just works as it should: switch recording on, and the timer and track recording starts with a time interval defined in Settings. When minimizing the application or when the display is off, GPS is switched off and recording stops

I experience the same behaviour. While the displayed distance is correct when recording using continuous logging, it is not updated when using 60s interval, probably because the GPS is switched OFF and ON. Only after saving the track can one see the correct track length. Look like the same issue
