I just went through an upgrade, really easy, the 1.5 version sees the older
version and just does the upgrade, you may have to re-edit your rules after the
upgrade, but that is easy.

If you run the install program, it should recognize ossec is running a
previous version and ask you if you want to upgrade.
It will also ask you if you want to set up new rules (which overwrites
all rules but local rules).
We upgraded over a dozen servers as such without a hitc
I want this rule not to be logged, but i do want to receive an e-mail.
When i use this custom rule:

The no_log function works, but i don't get an email. When i add
alert_by_email
the same happens.

1.5. Should I stop the ossec daemons before upgrading? Also, is there
any problem with having an older agent (1.4) talk to a newer server
(1.5)? Thanks for your help.
