the ossec server is on a different subnet so it cannot see the client by
internal ip so I supposed I'll just use the external ip address - the
firewall is has a rule to allow all traffic from the ossec server to the
client.

It depends on where your ossec server sits in your network. If you can ping
your ossec server from your webserver using the private ip then use private.

The agent can only log to the central ossec server. From there you can
forward logs to a central syslog server. Hope that helps.
