I had the same problem earlier and I first ran into new errors by modifying
Config.pm with
$Self->{'PostMasterPOP3MaxEmailSize'} = 1024 * 10;
and not modifying SQL option max_allowed_packet.
Now I have also modified /etc/my.cnf, everything is working propoerly,
