Getting permission from Dallas sounds fine to me. I have specific
permission for all code and data and background information currently used
in owfs and I wouldn't want to use any questionable techniques. At least in
the standard distribution.

Well the datasheet for the DS1961S is only available on request, so I don't
know if an open source driver would be possible.

Fuse doesn't exist for the windows platform (although there are some
projects attempting to provide it.)
OWFS should build fine without fuse, just the filesystem won't be created.
Web server , ftp server and owserver work wonderfully. As do languages,
ownet, shell programs.
