I am now writing to a relay board and an lcd and reading from a temp/ humidity/solar sensor all plugged into a 6 port hub in parallel and as fast as I can and it no longer hangs (all Hobby Boards hardware and USB).
My problem was that I had an old library in /usr/lib64. I don't know why, I did a make; make install but it just didn't update the lib. Once I removed all the rpms and remade everything started working. (And when Paul mentioned this as a possibility a few days ago, of course I thought "not me, I'm too experienced for that to happen". Ha!) So triple check the dates on your libraries if you're still having problems Love the sound of those little relays clicking...
