fate by doing the laptop with less than 1hr of battery life left and the sp
installer told me to get off my arse and go and get the power cable. Said it
would wait for me.

Just to give some balance to the negative (and a desire to avoid that thing

Continuing the hardware failure theme, this morning I used Windows Update to
do the Win7 SP1 patch (64-bit), and have spent 100 minutes getting my system
to boot again after the install's first reboot.
The system restore (back to prior SP1) failed - "unspecified error" - and
