Hi Denise Thank you for highlighting this leaflet about informed consent, I rang the number and ordered 100 copies - they turned up yesterday - and I agree they are excellent - there are other informative leaflets also available - about the complaints process etc - an order form is available by phoning 1800 043 159. The Dept of Health attitude of "be an active participant in your health care and in the decision making process" comes across well. I often quote this in my sessions but having it in writing - encouraging responsibility - adds to the credibility of the statement.
Very worthwhile - thank you Denise. Julie Clarke Childbirth and Parenting Educator Transition into Parenthood 9 Withybrook Pl Sylvania NSW 2224 T. I know WA has a version. I recommend those in other states check out the presence of their own locality! Imagine if this was the first information all pregnant women were given, understood and acted on it. It has ramifications for the "Waiting lists" For example there was letter and article in the local paper of a family's distress at the wait in clinics of a woman who had an incomplete misc. then end up with a D&C in the middle of the night and transfer to the postnatal ward where the cries of the babies upset her and her family. A common story but I think it would be rare if all women who miscarried knew of Scandinavian research which disproves the and even questions doing a D&C Imagine if all women were informed of this and the (supported) option of bed rest at home, with friends family?? I for 1 would not have had my day and night in hospital years ago! Imagine if all pregnant women were informed that if you want a low intervention birth with which you are more likely be satisified and able to breast feed you should have or get midwifery care!! Should the politicians and Health Department not be made to support informed consent and access to research based practices or run the risk of being prosecuted and "outed"for being negligent!! So I recommend we get copies for all our clients, friends and families! Take them when you see your politicians and bureaucrats who are not supporting informed choice or who are blocking access to informed choice and options of care ? Remeber there is a case that To do procedures to women without informed consent is assault!! Am I dreaming or over smilpifiying these matters??
