Dear Barbara ,
THIS WEEK AT THE PARENTS JURY
THE 2006 CHILDREN'S TV FOOD ADVERTISING AWARDS ANNOUNCEMENT
The winners of this year's Food Ad Awards were announced yesterday at a
terrific event in Sydney.
AND THE WINNERS ARE .
. The Pester Power Award went to McDonald's for the Action Man and My Little
Pony ad.
. The Smoke and Mirrors Award went to Karicare for the Toddler Gold Formula
ad.
. The Parents Choice Award went to Sanitarium Weetbix for the breakfast of
the Socceroos ad.
The complete announcement media release can be read in full by following

I would like to say a big "thank you" to all of the parents and children who
came along to the event and helped to make it such a great occasion. We
enjoyed hearing from Dr. Rosemary Stanton about the link between the large
volumes of advertising for unhealthy foods our children are exposed to on
television, and the rising levels of overweight and obesity in Australia.
Also, "thank you" to Parents Jury member Shalani McCray for telling it the
way she sees it from the parents' perspective and so eloquently announcing
the winners.
We had a great media turn out to the event including TV film crews from ABC,
ch7, ch9, and ch10 as well as many press journalists. We are still in the
process of compiling all of the media coverage and will include a complete
tally in next week's newsletter. A few of the early news stories have been
published to The Parents Jury website for you to read. Click on the link
below each summary to go to the full story.
"Parents pan McDonald's pony giveaways" (The Australian, 11/10/06). A
McDonald's television ad that offers a free plastic pony with children's
meals has been panned by parents as the most manipulative commercial on
television. The fast food giant has won the unenviable "Pester Power" gong
for the second year running at The Parents Jury TV Food Advertising Awards.
This year it was a McDonald's ad with My Little Pony and Action Man Happy
Meal giveaways that raised the ire of the health lobby group, which said the
toys acted as a "lure".

"Pester vote goes to McDonald's" (Sydney Morning Herald, 11/10/06). For the
second year running, McDonald's has won the Pester Power Award in the
Parents Jury Children's Television Food Advertising Awards. More than 1400
parents voted in the awards, which highlight the role played by marketing
and advertising in the childhood obesity epidemic. McDonald's won the Pester
Power Award for its Happy Meals advertisements, which the Parents Jury said
use the promise of free toys to encourage children to pester their parents
to take them to the fast food chain.

"Unlikely ally eases junk food shame" (Sydney Morning Herald, 12/10/06).
Though maligned by anti-globalisation activists and conscientious parents
alike, the bioethicist Peter Singer says McDonald's may not be so bad after
all. "I see big corporations following what consumers will buy," Professor
Singer said. "If you have sufficiently educated consumers, you can get
ethical food from big corporations." Professor Singer's comments will come
as cold comfort to the major food manufacturers McDonald's, Hungry Jack's,
Cadbury Schweppes, Kellogg Australia and Coca-Cola Amatil, all of which were
named and shamed yesterday at The Parents Jury Children's Television Food
Advertisement Awards.

If you would like to comment on the Food Ad Awards or any other topic
relating to children's nutrition or physical activity environments log on to
the Parents Jury website and go to the discussion forum.

Finally, but by no means least importantly, "thank you" to all the members
who participated in the nomination and voting process and helped to make the
2006 Awards such a successful program. The Parents Jury is your forum and we
are here to represent your views. The more parents that participate, the
louder and greater our collective voice will be.
The team at The Parents Jury wish you a healthy and happy week!
Kind regards,
Justine Hodge
