Here's the strange thing. I have 2 user accounts on my machine that can use xvidcap more or less reliably, only very few crashes. If however I create a new user (same group membership) and even try to use xvidcap it crashes as soon as there is too much movement in the recording area. When crashed the frame-counter stops and the application is frozen.
