I thought I had done a soft-reset at some point after noticing the problem
and before posting this email... And sometime after posting I must have
done something different (or actually did the reset) because it started
hotsyncing again.

If I remember what Ben said some time ago, Sony didn't implement the
debugging stubs on the 615/625 devices for USB, so you can't debug with
a USB cradle on this device.
