building older PAR, so it seems that, for me at least, anything newer
than 0.90 isn't working...

Thanks a lot for your reply!
I installed Perl (and Par) as a 'normal' user. Deleting /tmp/par* didn't
seem to help.
Out of despair, I'm trying with a '-Duseshrplib' perl, which is not the
default under Irix (at some point it used to help...)
