several previous release dates, I believe it should be somewhere in
September / October, am I right?

That is about right.
The plan is to call it 4.0-alpha and have 4.0 final three months or so
after that.

I'm not aware of any option to build/link against mpi-io. This is just a
standard build with mpi support that suffers from this issue.
The ParaView website's builds also have the same bug.

not sure how to go about and do so. I am assuming the call would go into
the RequestUpdateExtent Script.
In the C++ equivalent filters that do request ghost data, the call to is
