All right. I solved the issue. My graphic card drivers where not
properly installed. Re-installation of these have solved the problem
and now I have direct rendering again and can use volume.

glxinfo | grep -i vendor
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
client glx vendor string: SGI
OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation

I've seen BadLength errors when mixing mesa-dri and nvidia for glx
client/server side.
"glxinfo | grep -i vendor" in a terminal can probably verify that.
