Is there a way to enter time into vtk files for display during animations?

I think that "Source > Annotate Time" should work (in paraview 4.x, but I
think also in 3.X).

sorry... I misunderstood your question.
I'm not sure if there is a way to do it with VTK, but there should be a way
to do it with the "XML" evolution of the format.
If you time step is constant, a quick and dirty approach could be rename
you files like file0001, file0002, ... and then I
