Just checked MSConfig and found Nero and Adobe related items running on
startup. Unchecked both and the problem songs played fine. Then, rechecked
each and then both and the song still played fine. Oh, well. Now, I'm just
curious as to what's going on.

I'll look. This is fairly new or unoften explored territory to me. I just
tried stopping AVG and that seemed to work, but I'm surprised since my machine
is fast and I don't remember hearing of anyone else having to do that.

sampling rates. Since the size of the resultant file is the same, what is
the advantage of a lower sampling rate?

Another thing to check is to run msconfig and look through the entries
in the Startup tab. There may be some entries in there that don't show
up in the system tray.
You could also bring up Task Manager or some other process reporting
