How about making the qwerty keyboard numbers alone work as single strokes?
1=record 2=stop? afterall, so far as I am aware, they are not used by any
other application so ought to be freely available.
I might give it a try but at present, have been happy with the two-key
activation.

I copied the original and modified keyboards from this laptop to my upstairs
desktop. I already had GoldWave v5.67 open there. I decided to go into
options, keyboard, load and hit space bar, I pointed at the modified file,
