Hi all
Just my two cents worth on this also ...
I would rather go to the trouble of converting a .txt book into mp3 with a
reasonable sapi 5 voice than suffer listening to the very robotic sounding
speech of the bookport.
Sure technology has improved somewhat since the 1980s since that type
Or put a phone in my Braille Note!
Now if I could have a phone that could do that plus have a daisy reader,
that would be just right.

The BookCourier is, I believe, the same physical size as the BookPort but
the BookPort has an extra row of buttons which enables
Hi Dane,
The Bookport doesn't record from line in from what I remember. It does
internal mic. I read up about it a while back, before I found out about
rockbox. Apparently they're coming out with a new unit, so it might be
part of that one.

Hi again,
Now that I think about it, a daisy player for the smartphones shouldn't
be too far off at all. There are ones for the Pac Mate, which is
basically the pocket PC platform, and if you have a phone that runs on
that it should almost be able to be installed. As for phones like the

Hi Dane,
The courier and port are like the braille 'n speak from Blazie and the
scholar from APH. Same device with a few minor modifications on APH's part.

I'll keep an eye on that then. There was something else available,
can't think of the name of it now but it was quite an impressive
little box of tricks, it played and recorded to flash memory and you
could edit your recordings, transferring them to CD using the built-
in CD drive, it spoke
I'll look into that, this could be handy. I know someone is actively
working on an OcR package for smart phones such as the N70, it will
work like the NFB reader, that is you hold the phone over a page of
text and press the camera button butt one thing at a time as I'm
going off-topic.

best thing about the book port or book courier is the ease of scanning
through a file to locate your place. the worst thing is the transfer speed.
Damn slow.
