How about the M-Audio Delta Audiophile 24/96? They're probably pretty
cheap now with the release of the 24/192. I think I payed $129 for it
three years ago, and have recently seen it for about $79 or so. May be
even less now.

Just a very basic I/O: two sets of RCA for input and output,
as well as a breakout cable for midi and sp/dif. I have one, and it's a
very clean card. Recording at 24-bit, I can get a SNR of about -90 DB or
so.

You'll probably not want to use this as your main sound card, as it's a
waste of such good hardware to run speech through it, but definitely
very nice for general audio playback and recording stuff.
Because of the way it's designed, you'll most likely never need to play
with the input level of the card itself, unless you have no control of
the output from your analog source to the card.
