[PD] making puredata headphone-safe

I've managed to hurt my ears twice over the past two days when using PD w/ headphones. Even at lowest system volumes, it seems that Terrible Things can happen. Are there any precautions that I can take to make it feel less like I'm taking my life into my hands when I have to use headphones? _

I've tried getting into around with pd a couple of times before, this is my first concerted time. I've worked with a bunch of flow-charty programming environments in the past (Unreal Engine's kismet is the slickest I've come across - http://odedge.com/forums/ut3_kismet_04.jpg ) - pure data is taki
