if you can `dvgrab` your camera, then your camera has a DV link interface.
`dc1394` is not the same and it's intended for industrial IIDC compliant
cameras.
You *cannot* grab a DV camera with the DC1394 library, see [1].

Ubuntu repos, with a compiled Gem-0.93.3.
Configure output of Gem shows:
capture-support
use PLUGINS : yes
use v4l : yes (libv4l)
use v4l2 : yes (libv4l)
