Any luck reproducing? I changed all the data values
in the sample to non-zero ones and the result was
still 2 zeros. I wonder if the problem depends on the
type of the input data?

I've just reviewed the CPAN Testers reports for
CHM/PDL-2.007_16.tar.gz (a.k.a. PDL-2.008 RC3):
