Brian Mark figured it out - I updated ACR and it solved the problem.
As Mark notes the fresh download of CS3 is not updated. Though I have
activated the software it reports that there are no available updates.
But it seems to be working fine - hopefully Bob S. can tell his friend.

Updates for CS 2 weren't available when I checked in December but it did
lead me to the Adobe DNG convertor.
I've had the same issue with my Nikon Coolpix 7100 and its DNGs.

Ah, the power cord bugs you. Yeah, that was a compromise because I
liked the way the light glow was radiating from a bulb just out of
frame and I didn't want to lose that possible point of interest. I
could probably clone out the admittedly ugly power cord.

Every so often someone will ask what I'm taking photos of.
I show them the photos on the back of the camera after we chat a while.
Most seem to like them. Some don't understand, shrug, and walk away.
