umlaut on windows machines: while depressing the ALT key, type in on the
numerical key pad, on the right hand side of your key board, 0252, then let
the ALT key go.
You can find all of these in the Character Map, a little program that get
installed with windows under accesories.

My wife and I spent a couple of very pleasant days in
the Schwartzwald a few years ago, staying in an inn at
Stube (this keyboard doesn't have an omlaut). Someday
I may dig out the slides (slides?!?) from that trip,
and our 20-km walk, and scan a few.
