I was told by a historian who was responsible for a covered bridge here in North
Carolina that it was at least in part to help keep from spooking the horses when
they had to cross the stream.

It turns out that there are quite a few covered bridges in this part of
Oregon. It shouldn't be much of a surprise that it's pretty challenging
to photograph them at night. Just getting a clear sky to see the stars
is a challenge, particularly one without the moon causing issues.
