I mostly shoot with primes when I have a good idea of what I'm going
to be shooting. But for more flexibility, I either take the DA 12-24

might want to consider the 18-135 if you are going to stay with APS-C.

The 16-45 has been my most used lens for all of my most recent
trips. On my current one, over 95% of my shots have been taken with
it: the range is so useful for city walking and most landscapes. I
brought the 50-200 this time as well, but have only used it
half-a-dozen times.
I like my 16-45 a lot. Got it to go with my ist D about a decade ago. My
only frustration is the limited zoom range. I would likely replace it with
a 17-70 if I trusted that Pentax had fixed its SDM drive.
Faster lenses are too large and heavy to be appealing.

OK, at this point I'm leaning towards the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. The one
report I've had from the list about it is that it's optically very
good. The outside reviews complain about it's plasticy build, and noisy
AF motor, but hell large numbers of even fairly expensive lenses are

It's only a stop slower than the other 16/17mm-50/55mm lenses, and the
same speed as the Pentax 17-70mm. Everything I've heard about it is
good, but I ruled it out because I've been looking for something that
fills in the gap between the short zoom and one of the 70-210mm lenses I
tend to favor
I have the 16-45 Pentax DA F4 and am quite happy with it. It may not
be fast enough for you, but for me it works well.

The Tamron SP AF 17-50/2.8 XR is my favorite standard zoom. Cheap and
reliable. I have my second one after a fall with my bike.

Either one stumped the spell checker, so I was at a loss. The actual
name of the lens is "VMC Vivitar Series 1 35-85mm 1:2.8 Auto Variable
Focusing" so I suppose I should have known how to spell it, but I'm lazy.

Let me just link my previous response to a very similar question earlier

P.S. It is "varifocal", not "Varafocal". ;-
I've had the Sigma 17-50/2.8 for about three months now and am happy
with the results. I might have gotten the 17-70 but the additional $100
wasn't in my budget at the time. It's still nicely discounted at

Boris, let me think about what I might need for samples. Much as I'd
like to take you up on the 17-70, the shipping from Israel would
probably negate the great price. The 24-60 looks like a very good lens,

So I've been getting along using a combination of a Manual focus
Varafocal, (Vivitar 35-85mm f2.8), and a FA 20-35mm which satisfies most
of my needs, but they can be damnably inconvenient, the varafocal makes
me think that sometimes I need extra fingers and more inertial
