This may be a little late, but would this adapter help you? It's a
cold shoe. Mount it in the shoe on your bracket, then the cable/flash
assembly on top of it.

Some hotshoe (well, coldshoe really) adapters actually have a channel right
down the centre to avoid any contact at all. The shoe is still gripped on
the edges.
