A little calculation using f/calc: 1 - Full frame 5 subject equals to a rough 1:5 ratio. 2 - Using your 50mm lens you'll get 1:5 at 30 cm., i.e. you need an extension tube. 3 - At f/1.4 and 30 cm. (1 ft) your 50mm will yiekd less than 3mm depth of field (with a .033 COC). Hope this helps,

Allright, I guess I'll be shopping for extension tubes. Thanks to all for your help. Steven. -- ___ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Email.com http://www.email.com/?sr=signup - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. To

OT: limiting DOF for macro???

I need advice on how to severly limit DOF for macro work. I realize that most (all?) macro equipment tends to reduce DOF. I want to limit the sharp area to a few millimeters on a (35mm) frame filling shot of a 5 inch subject. What is the best set up for this? Tubes, reversing ring, close-up

A frame filling shot of a 5 subject is hardly macro work. Tubes, bellows, etc wouldn't be neccesary. Either of your zooms should cover it. Just shoot wide open to limit DOF. Christian On Thursday 23 May 2002 14:54, steven gilson wrote: I need advice on how to severly limit DOF for macro

My point was that for the subject mentioned in the original post (5 inches filling a 35mm frame) the lenses he had would do it. There is no need to buy anything extra for what he wants to do now. Sure later on he may want to get more junk but maybe he'll never need it again. Christian On

Ok, let me try this again. I do realize that I don't need specialized macro equipment to get the framing I want. But what I have does not limit the depth of field to the level I'm looking for. I have tried this shot with both the 35-105 and the 50 wide open. So maybe I don't need macro

Steve: Depth of field is dependant on two things1) how close you are to your subject or in other words the magnification factor, and 2) the maximum opening of your lens. The two combined, as in most macro work, means extemely limited depth of field. You can probably use what you have. Shoot
