I personally like the birds; I think they add a bit to the sense of
abandonment by humans, but each to their own. The reason for the original
pic being a bit skew-whiff was because I had (inadvertently) put up the
birds as I approached, and hurriedly fired off a shot w

A former lister, Peter of Sunny Brighton actually posted some pics as the fire
was in progress too (Fri, 28 Mar 2003).

Please say more about the technical qualities! It was, incidentally, a
very dull day.

Not a bad shot on many levels, but a straight horizon and vertical pier
frames, and maybe a bit of a crop off the bottom, would improve this pic
quite a bit.

I don't know about the technical qualities, but as photo-
journalism it works very well - I just showed it to my wife
(a student at Brighton several decades ago).

Above the deck level, the metalwork formed a frame for what looked like
ordinary buildings, with walls and roofs of wood. Actually, it looks
rather modern in a way, except that modern buildings would have rolled
steel frames rather than cast-iron, and perhaps aluminium or glass
cladding.

didn't somebody else post a photo of this pier not so long ago? I remember
it still having glass and not being quite so dilapidated...

You probably mean the East Pier, which is still standing, and still in
use. In their heyday, the two piers were in competition.
Still a shame that the West Pier had to go, but it's far from alone in
being abandoned to the waves and the weather.
