seemed not to be a rational reason for either of them.

I considered a tight crop, but decided that I liked the variety of
reactions (and non-reactions) from the surrounding crowd.

I believe the "mob scene" is the Spanish Steps. A tourist mecca always
packed with people, mostly young folks.
