it's quite a wise idea in any case. I always take copies of the receipts
when I travel abroad. If anything is stolen I have something to show the
local police that I'm not just inventing stuff.
It's also not a bad idea to take 2 copies, kept separately, and away from
the equipment itself.

IIRC there is no duty on Camera Equipment in the US. We have no native
manufacturers to protect.

When I flew to Canada last month, neither state looked into my carry-on
bags. There was a declarations form to fill out in flight (both directions)
but they're not interested in your gear.
