Hi John - There's an HDR layer in the mix in that image, just to open up the shadows a bit. I almost always run things through Photomatix with the settings dialed back just enough to open up the shadows and enhance local contrast a little. That is usually one of the first layers that I blend

Thanks, Toralf! The balloon was blocking the setting sun, and as it started to rise into the air, I noticed that the sun was going to pop out from behind the balloon, and I tried to get a backlit shot and then one with as much of the sun as I could include, without blowing everything out
