Hi, there was also a very good b&w photo essay in National Geographic Nov. 1997 called "Hutsul Village" from the Ukrainian part of the Carpathians, which is culturally much the same as the Romanian part, as you might expect. When I was up there I was only 2km from the border with the Ukraine and was told that a $5- tip to the border guard would get me across, no questions asked. From the hills above the village I could see the dirt track stretching out over the hills and valleys and into the Ukraine. Very beautiful, and very remote.
The people in the valley where I was photographing spoke a very interesting mix of Romanian, Ukrainian and local dialect words.
