in fact they are not within their rights. The Taleban are not the
legitimate government of Afghanistan. Even if they were, Afghanistan
is part of the UN and has signed up to the conventions behind the
UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which includes the giant Buddha statues,
and recognises that certain things belong to the world's culture, not to
a single culture or nation.

They do not have any legal right to destroy them. They claim a moral
right, which is as well- or as ill-founded as the moral right of
Christians or Jews to destroy 'graven images' on the basis that it is
part of the Mosaic law.
