Mmm my any approaching experience has been trying to focus my Tamron
500/8 on my K10D (with tripod of course). I was inside and tried to
shoot the moon through the window.
Sure enough:
* Quite difficult to focus without split screen ([EMAIL PROTECTED]/8)
* Exposure was waayy off on the K10D, had
A 1000mm F8 lens is easier to focus than a 500mm F8 lens
if lens quality is same..

Probably not because most long lenses actually move slightly past the
infinity mark to allow for temperture variations. The problem then is to
find infinity :-)
In practice, it actually make focusing at infinity somewhat easier as ther
is a soft-sharp-soft transition, rather than a soft-?
No because it seems my very lens likes to focus past infinity (quite a
bit by the way). I thought about that but obviously it is of not help
in my case.
Not sure I have money to fix it, for now.

It's not broken. Don't try to fix it.

I just purchased this lens so that I can seriously compress distance and for
beach shots of ships and surfers taken off the piers here in Southern
California. This beastie weighs about 11.6 pounds, so it'll go on the 475B
tripod and 229 head. I'll be putting it on a CG-5 equatorial mount
It' huge dude. (You didn't say what kind of comments...)

Listmeister brought one to GFM several years ago. Someone somewhere
has a photo of Jostein and me playing with it.
Then we couldn't get it off the body, and Doug had to come help us...
There is a smallish camera/rare coin shop here in Orlando that has a 500mm
f/5 Takumar mounted to a black Spotmatic. It sits on a largish tripod next
to the front window. Folks look through it at stuff across the street.
I asked the owner one time if it was for sale. He scratched his head and

The design dates back to M42 days. My first SLR was a Honeywell Pentax
H2, bought used in 1966. I also picked up a booklet on the Pentax
system, and just dreamed of having this lens. I still think from time to
time of getting one, but they are for sale rarely.
Are you shooting it on a DSLR?
Just bought it. I'll let you know how it focuses (at f/8) when I get some
time with it. I'll be using a K10D, so if I have any real problems focusing,
I can switch the preview to the screen and zoom way in 'till I can 'bout see
every pixel.

Bob...

I had one in M42 version that I borrowed from Don for a few years.
It was a great lens to shoot with, but lawd, you have to want to.
Bob, when I spoke at GFM, I showed some landscape stuff I shot
