Thanks to all for looking & commenting. The Sycamore Fig (Ficus sycamorus) is the dominant tree species growing on Lowveld river banks. They become very large. Home to many animals & birds. The fruit is edible & apparently very tasty but considered too insect infested for general human consumption. The animals & birds don't mind though! Birds, monkeys, baboons & fruit bats eat aloft while antelope, hogs, cattle & elephants clean up below. Unfortunately, in town, most of the fruit is wasted & we have to put up with the pong of rotting fruit for a couple of weeks.
