It's optically an excellent lens.  I have several and have tested it.  It's 
got the best dust seals of any lens I own.  Autofocus is really not 
bad...it's fun to use.  Converts a manual focus camera to autofocus (& keeps 
the split screen!).

I vaguely recall that Tamron did make such a lens in early autofocus 
era (around 1988 - it is just a guess) but very shortly gave it up. I 
don't know about the optical quality of this lens but I heard that AF-
wise it was a disaster - slow, loud and hunting a lot. The lens 
contained both a large motor and autofocus sensors and was thus heavy 
and cumbersome. I would rather say - stay away from this lens.
