My son has expressed an interest in photography
but I am reluctant to let him borrow my good gear.
If you let him use anything except an LX (with the waist-level
finder) and the 50mm/f1.2 he'll be ruined as a photographer.
Sell all your own gear, if necessary, to do right by your son.

I agree. May I suggest a Pentax (M, A) 50mm f2. You can get it for a song, it
is a decent 50mm lens, and a prime is IMO a better start
