Dear Stan, lists,

S: The studies supported by society -- especially in science -- are often of
longer term interest. SC is not a bugaboo, just a fact.

I think SC is no simple fact - rather it is a host of different things - from
the (trivial) observation that universities and academies and labs are social
institutions - and all the way to the (erroneous) supposition that the results
of science are nothing but political claims in disguise, only serving to
further professor carreers or to confirm prejudices of funding agencies or both
...

The knowledge we generate reflects the interests of those who generate it.

In many cases those interests are many, even contradictory - and, what is more,
knowledge refelcts many other things than interests, so it seems less than
serious to focus unilaterally upon that ...

Best
