I have problems with microcredit for a few reasons: 1. In many of the countries where the credit is extended to women, the same women are legally prohibited from marketing their own wares, and the profits are controlled by the men in the family. 2. Micro credit by definition defines the kinds of investments women are 'allowed' to make--macro credit being more applicable to males than females in the direct conclusion. 3. The kinds of work microcredit creates is no different than the piece work engaged in by some many women in the nineteenth century--exactly the same kind of piece work which led to starvation, poverty, and Dickensian type stories. maggie coleman [EMAIL PROTECTED]
