Michael, It's funny how distance puts a glow around some politicians. Here in CA, I know John V. as a shrewd and able liberal who is not above playing power politics, making deals and compromising to get a piece of legislation passed even if it means cutting out some important constituency. Don't get me wrong. I'd rather have a legislature filled with the likes of Vasconcellos than the typical pol who populates the capitol, but don't overrate him or make him out to be some kind of exceptional politician. He's certainly not as left or independent as Bernie Sanders, for example, or Ron Dellums (if you want a Demo example). Michael E.
