Last week sometime, I posted to the list a call for a special issue of
Science & Society on "The Capitalist Ruling Class." (I can re-post this if
anyone missed it.)

This attempt to stimulate some interest intersects with a nagging feeling I
often get when reading the insightful posts to PEN! The discussion re Nove,
redistribution, etc. (June, Trond, Gar -- and others) is full of nuggets, and
potential, but it threatens to get lost in cyberspace! Can anyone suggest a
way of synthesizing this material -- perhaps into a Symposium for the S&S
special issue -- so that it is preserved in a generally accessible (and
citable) form?

I agree with what seems to be an evolving consensus: redistribution is not
the entire story, but it is a non-trivial component of socialist strategy.
The case for socialism, and its related political reality (the moment when
"its time has come") depends on redistribution driving empowerment, and
empowerment driving development.

The special issue is projected for Spring 2000. Stated deadline for mss. is
March 1999. Proposals welcome immediately.
