Lots of time people believe things; they "hear" things, etc. -- surprise, even smart honest knowledgeable people say things that are wrong. Confronted by questions from students I often will say: "I think the following --- ... --- I'll try to find the exact facts for you." Sometimes, surprise surprise, I say something, then go check it , and turn out to have made a mistake. There is nothing wrong with making honest mistakes. My question was a way of guarding against an honest mistake. I see no contradiction between what I wrote and Etchison's alternatives which he believes CONTRADICTS what I wrote.
