I saw a request for information on the Wizard of Oz the other day (I
believe it was Doug Henwood but I'm not sure). Here are some pieces that
might be of interest:

1. Henry M. Littlefield, "The Wizard of Oz: Parable on Populism,"
American Quarterly, Spring 1964. An expanded version is included in
Hennig Cohen, ed., The American Culture, Houghton Mifflin Co., 1968.

2. Stewart Robb, "The Red Wizard of Oz," New Masses, October 4, 1938.

3. S. J. Sackett, "The Utopia of Oz," The Georgia Review, Fall 1961.

4. L. Frank Baum, The Emerald City of Oz, Chapter 3 -- for Baum's
utopian vision.

5. L. Frank Baum, The Road to Oz. pp. 164-165 -- on money, etc.

I think Doug Henwood was looking for Littlefield's article, but I took
the liberty of adding the others. I hope it helps. I would have sent
this directly to him but I wasn't sure if he was the person who had
requested the information.
