About 12 percent of the Vietnam-era veterans had a service-connected disability and about half had participated in special education and training programs=85. The average worker holds nearly nine different jobs between the ages of 18 and 32, but most have settled into a career by the age of 27, BLS reports (Daily Labor Report, page D-3) Last week, 30 years to the day after he went to work for BLS, Deputy Commissioner William G. Barron Jr. told his boss he is quitting - not to make more money elsewhere or to retire, but to move = to another government job where he thinks "I can make a difference." He has agreed to become deputy undersecretary of commerce for economic affairs. His major new task: budget and management oversight of the politically charged year 2000 census. "Bill Barron is one of a very small, select handful of experienced managers of statistical agencies=85..He is a man above politics and above reproach," says his soon-to-be boss Undersecretary Rob Shapiro. Last month Barron received the prestigious National Public Service Award. (The Washington Post, page A21) The Department of Commerce released a comprehensive summary of statistics on social, political, and economic organizations of the US state and metropolitan areas for the year ending in the fall of 1997. The statistical abstract "State and Metropolitan Area Data Book 1997-98" contains a selection of data from many statistical publications (Daily Labor Report, page A17). New durable goods orders plunged 2.6 percent or $4.9 billion to $184.3 billion in May, the first decrease since February, = the Census Bureau reports. Analysts say slackened demand from economically troubled Asian countries contributed strongly to the decline. The falloff in new orders in May followed a revised 1.6 percent April increase.(Daily Labor Report, page D-1). __The durable goods orders report surprised economists and offered fresh evidence of Asia's impact on the U.S. economy. The drop was much steeper than the 0.7 percent fall forecast by private economists (The Washington Post, page C5). __Orders to United States factories for big ticket durable goods fell sharply in May, as Asia's economic crisis helped to depress orders for transportation and electronics related goods (The = New York Times, page D8; The Wall Street Journal, page A2). The Economic Advisory Committee of the American Bankers Association predicted that U.S. economic growth will slow to an annual rate of about 2.5 percent because of the Asian economic crisis. As a result, the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates steady and perhaps even reduce them late next year. The group expressed "great" concern about Japan's "unprecedented" problems. It said the Fed has rightly been concerned about potential wage and price pressures stemming from the tight labor market (The Washington Post, page C5). ------ =_NextPart_000_01BDA076.287C4270 b3NvZnQgTWFpbC5Ob3RlADEIAQWAAwAOAAAAzgcGABkAEAARABAABAApAQEggAMADgAAAM4HBgAZ gAEAEQAAAEJMUyBEYWlseSBSZXBvcnQAkAUBDYAEAAIAAAACAAIAAQOQBgCsCwAAHAAAAEAAOQDQ MkI/dqC9AR4AcAABAAAAEQAAAEJMUyBEYWlseSBSZXBvcnQAAAAAAgFxAAEAAAAWAAAAAb2gdZmj FQCKmQwREdKIjgAgr5wDCAAAHgAxQAEAAAANAAAAUklDSEFSRFNPTl9EAAAAAAMAGkAAAAAAHgAw Kb8aUv8ACgEPAhUCpAPkBesCgwBQEwNUAgBjaArAc2V0bjIGAAbDAoMyA8UCAHDccnESIAcTAoB9 CoAIzx8J2QKACoENsQtgbmcxCDAzMwr0bGkxNPI0AtFpLRfDDNAXwwtVZxLyDAETkG90BZAFQEKC TAXwREFJTFkH8ABFUE9SVCwgVFBIVVJTGqBZG2BKQFVORSAyNRtgMfA5OTg6CosXoAHBGP8HGgQK hRsATEVBU0WKRBtwTxvROiBWEgADBJAGIm9mIHRoZYMg8AiQdG5hbSAhMSAgd2hvIADQdHWRB0Bs eSAR8HJ2CYCeIAuABgAIYCHBYXMFQB5BAJAioBHAI+BoaWdDIdAFwHVuZW0LUG//BsAJ8AVAIUAa EAQgIcADkf8jwCEqJrAidyOVJEEAkA2wfSG7dwrBJGIhISGAKrNpzQXAbgIgJ1UgcAngEeDXG2AA 0AWhZAuAZyGwIuDjIcIVMHN1bClwIYIioLcGYAUwJfBiJaEcsTEjgOMIcCPAeS4gE9AG4CRQZxyg EiAskHJjJmIhnC1fIoInVyUiIqAjkmkxIC29BaBuJeAaMCPRLVBzAaD5AxBpdCNwAHAzUTBzEcDu bCGgJSIKsXQz0AUgJrE9I+NzLJA24AdAInBkddpjJrBpAiA1U3QhQAuAHy1iGeEJwCJQE2AnODXW LgqFCoVUIdFhI8AhQGpnIeB3BbBrJaEi0Gz+ZAQgJeAKwCNhOTEh4C1Qxw3QBJAmYmpvYgQgL0A8 dHcJ4SGzO7EhczE46TVTMzIbYGIwkQRgJKHvEcAjwCOBAkBsI9MtoSKgdzhACdEFwGIjcD71IYIy bjcbYBpiFTBwFNEEICj2RAtwI2FMNaEf4UQTG2DDCrA7wUQtMyk6XETwCyShPqFrG2AzMCB55zzR JuEttGRhNUEBgDwy7zvRJmItoTvyIAIQBcAaYT0bYEQu8CRQI3AIUG1tdwQBOHEloVcDEBegIlFH IECRzxUwQJEl4CNwZWwR8CLA/z3BK0Mi4BUwNsAVMEBEUGLeb0ERQeJQISWSZ1ORBKB/JlM+ISKx UfIh0SHAC4Br+QQgIklCIQOgUJMioD2G6TEgLiIwQEhVsSSQPyH/CdE40SLgL0AFoAeANKBLNP8l 0ASBEfAFABIACsAjcCGRf1lhB4AxEUqDBZEr4EvAY91JIWYLcBHgMDFITiEAwM8+ICvBB9EBkHNr IOBAUf5kO8AFQDViA4E7sSZTVJL/AJAlgDFXRCA1ETPQI0MRsu87wCPgSCIcYDBioEIgCfDzLjBd AiJCTHFNBk4hTBH/LoQ7gSNxAMAjUBtgEfBBgDMaMScRZGYuQCGCZXj/MPEIkFfBXyZIUSGRJKA4 Ub8koGFSPyJXwAiQOfQuWDH/TiEioAOCNaFBEWEFWIE1dM9BEUQBA2AA0GgsWAA00KZ5MxFOIXNv AiAtLaB2LS9ATkRVWjwIAFVQU/URwHArsG8wMUdDUTEhwPdNBhUwMSBpI8Jgwy4RNsA+ZzhwYyAH sDhTN+FQdb8CYFxxBmEzwhPQKpFkMDF6KDsyV0/RLWEtoAOgUONAsUW1QTIxRl07Mksh/zahX6Qh oEuSW4MVMEGAJJB/I9FCEQNwclEh0ACBQRJ1/0uwWtVoZ2RSbYE3wkWxYRYvLOE1cVwXBbBnAHBp evs4UyF3VQXwaGI7UV8SEgD/A2BhA2qSFTBYcUqSIcJiQ/9PoS1iJAEhwlzAY6E/ghzAfjcwMTsy aGs+QDjxGjEi+lOAR02A6gcQJIAakCaw3SKgQm2gSnCEMi0c0B4t/mMN4FZgHi8aBFsxAjALcf9q QmXEOHIhkUjwiCEDUl8yfyNxaHlLQHPCfyVEj0WXQfgxNyk6TQfCOCAhQAJg/yHgVIAEcCFxCyBn 8gtQJdAxYgIyLjYw6AXAJDS8Ljk+YExyOIEtoSQ/sO2VsDOV5yQBTUkAG2CDc39c4QVABYGBskEh C4BboUa4ZWJyIzBa4Jf0Q2Lz9xpQCHAkgHVD9jAyc2FtIO8uYW0BI4ALYGM8ICXgNJH/JfA1Yo2j XBYjQ4Dxc7Ej0f8kwwOgBaAl0DjwaXGLwwUQ70BhI9GFwQIgZ57SSJUFkP8XoCXghHWDsiGQIaAk AV3i/5PFl5RKgaNhPqAzUhUwM8D1eeIxlMlBE5ADEZlRmOOeLo/fRZl24DpGX187Mv+S72fyRAQv wqcReeJcFZxS/zVio4E9wZ3CB5BP8KXRDbD3mWIhkSTSJ6SBJgCF8pZC+X/SLlMwMFwUMCKqc4EB /yqBXWE4ME/wJKAJ4DDxJvTxIcIwLjcw54OzSpEFkPckkkKhpxF2gFKtGXUfdij0QzWpyU+T1C2h bpA1IP8j0YZDgeEjAQWwoGJKkjTw/y2BM9A8IJiRqss9sGOhT+D/CsALUCNwl5ZYca+lXBcFAfsA kE6CbCyQWPNZsS4Rk6f/ggMhQkQiOFhl001Ba3J5ke83E5NktxMHwllKUgdjRbb8ODs7I7dgY6GG QAnRBUC+Sghhc2F2V5GuOzJFXCb8QWSl4QWwS3UCQAngIYb+QVtxYVEDoE0QVjBn8iTQ/3yzOGNy US1QNGMoE7D5XHH/CcClUHDhA/C9oqVBU8Q1Ub5uIzEmky6DMHOUsDUw5/9ZQZswmRHL9p+zv30w MCTQ/6WTLjKX9JmgBIE34UVQI5P/0GQ8IC7wQbI9wSShJqSzAf8lMDVEMPFv0b9RI8BxYjgh7ymz ImDEUjyxeAVASCKEdb3QAXWyUGbhwUIj0SIJwb8msFgANBExIAShNaRKb+D7AHCv4SIl0HJRZ2Em YQmA31gAGeGq8TngMDFJrFELcP9x9NbxWFMFEGBRI2EvQD7B/96VefIwc0QgGhACMDfSKpD/O8HZ 88yRcjQv0dlUS7Etcf+NoyHCcpFgYQtgqIJ7Ubxif7cfuC86iQr7GXQfhhRRAAHt8AMA8T8JBAAA AwD9P+QEAAADACYAAAAAAAMANgAAAAAAAgFHAAEAAAAwAAAAYz1VUzthPSA7cD1CTFM7bD1EQ1BD U01BSUwxLTk4MDYyNTIwMTcxNlotNzc4MzMAHgA4QAEAAAANAAAAUklDSEFSRFNPTl9EAAAAAB4A OUABAAAADQAAAFJJQ0hBUkRTT05fRAAAAABAAAcwwFNCP3agvQFAAAgwcEJ8KHagvQEeAD0AAQAA RUVBNENFOUM3RDAxMTlBRTQwMDYwOTcwNUNEODg2NkFDQjdAZGNwY3NtYWlsMS5wc2IuYmxzLmdv dj4ACwApAAAAAAALACMAAAAAAAMABhBmsEvEAwAHEC4KAAADABAQAAAAAAMAERABAAAAHgAIEAEA AABlAAAAQkxTREFJTFlSRVBPUlQsVEhVUlNEQVksSlVORTI1LDE5OTg6UkVMRUFTRURUT0RBWTpW RVRFUkFOU09GVEhFVklFVE5BTUVSQVdIT0FDVFVBTExZU0VSVkVESU5TT1VUSEVBUwAAAAACAX8A MS5wc2IuYmxzLmdvdj4A1OM= ------ =_NextPart_000_01BDA076.287C4270--
