position of Dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters at the

The University of Michigan-Dearborn, one of three campuses of the
University of Michigan, offers high quality and accessible
undergraduate, graduate, professional, and continuing education programs
to a diverse and talented student body of over 9000 in the greater
Detroit metropolitan area through the College of Arts, Sciences, and
Letters and the three professional units:  the School of Education, the
College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the School of
Management.  Over seventy-five percent of UM-Dearborn's 30,000
graduates live and work in Southeast Michigan.

The College of Arts,Sciences, and Letters

The College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL) is
the intellectual center of the campus, providing leadership for
exploring and understanding the legacy of human experience and the
traditions of free intellectual inquiry, critical thinking and ethical
behavior.   The core faculty of 165, housed in the Departments of
Behavioral Sciences, Humanities, Mathematics and Statistics, Natural
Sciences, and Social Sciences, offer a broad range of traditional and
innovative undergraduate academic programs which provide a unique blend
of theory and practice through significant internship, co-op and
research opportunities.  With a budget in excess of $14.4 million, the
College offers concentrations in more than thirty disciplines and
accounts for over sixty percent of the credit hours generated by the
UM-Dearborn campus.   Besides the students who are concentrators in the
College, students in the professional schools take a significant portion
of their course work in the College.  CASL has a distinguished Honors
Program that emphasizes a high level of academic excellence among the
students who are admitted to it each year.  In the past five years, the
College has begun to establish master's level graduate programs in
liberal studies, applied and computational mathematics, environmental
science, mathematics education, science education, and health
psychology.  It is envisioned that CASL will develop additional graduate
programs in the future in other fields for which there is considerable
faculty strength and demonstrated community need.   The CASL faculty
embrace a teacher/scholar model wherein the faculty place high value on
quality teaching, active learning and personal interaction with
students.  They are equally committed to research, creative endeavors,
applied scholarship and service to the University and surrounding community.

The Position

Reporting to the Provost, the Dean will be a collaborative member
of the University leadership and an articulate spokesperson for the
central role of the liberal arts and sciences in the UM-Dearborn
curriculum.  The Dean is expected to provide academic and strategic
vision for the College within the framework of a shared governance
system in ways that will strengthen the College and the University as a
whole. The Dean is responsible for all academic programs and services of
the College, including the offices of Advising and Student Records and
Cooperative Education.  The successful candidate will provide
intellectual and academic leadership to the faculty in matters related
to curriculum, research and faculty development.  The Dean is expected
to be a visible force beyond the boundaries of the College by working
with students, faculty, alumni and the community to enhance and build
external relations.  Fund raising will be an important component of the
Dean's responsibilities.  The successful candidate should be prepared to
undertake the responsibilities of Dean by July 1, 2004.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate and a record of
accomplishment as teacher and scholar sufficient to be granted tenure at
the University of Michigan-Dearborn; academic administrative experience
including planning and budgeting; demonstrated commitment to
scholarship, academic excellence, diversity, and multicultural
perspectives; possess strong interpersonal and communication
skills; display personal integrity and commitment; have outstanding
leadership and administrative skills, as well as have demonstrated
evidence of successful grant writing.  Fund-raising experience is highly
desirable.
