KUDANKULAM: Russia is keen on setting up at least four more advanced light
water nuclear reactors in India to further strengthen the techno-commercial
ties between the two countries which would be discussed during President
Vladimir Putin's forthcoming visit to India.

This was stated here by the Russia's Deputy Minister of atomic energy, E A
Reshetnikov, on Sunday at a press conference after the 'first concrete
pouring' of the country's first two 1000 MW each atomic power plants.

"Since India is our strategic partner, co-operation between the two
countries in nuclear energy sector will be mutually beneficial in the coming
years", he said.

On the importance of nuclear reactors for Kudankulam, 25 km from Kanyakumari
along the coast of Gulf of Mannar, he said it was very important as it gave
immense benefits to the local people in socio-economic and health spheres.

It was safe in having Russian nuclear reactors in India as the level of
expertise and safety records were very high. In fact, there was a rethinking
at the global level to go in for nuclear power in a big way as it has been
shown to be a clean energy, he said. "Both Russia and US have come out with
their ambitious projects," he said.
